In June, current graduate students G\u00e9rard Avelino and Quartz Colvin gave several presentations at the Austronesian Formal Linguistics Association (AFLA33<\/a>). This year, the conference was held in Wellington, New Zealand, at Victoria University of Wellington.<\/p>\n

G\u00e9rard gave one talk in the main session and two poster presentations. The solo talk was titled “All about ang: Recursive domain restriction and the identification of aboutness in Tagalog,” and the solo-authored poster was about “Deriving Tboli word classes from dependent case.” His other poster presentation was joint work on “Imperative force and person features: Evidence from Tagalog,” co-authored with Ariela Ye.<\/p>\n

Quartz Colvin gave two talks at the special session on Te Reo M\u0101ori. One talk<\/a> was solo-authored, titled “Variation of <w\u223cv> in Cook Islands M\u0101ori: A statistical approach.” The other talk was presented with Sally Akevai Nicholas (University of Auckland) on behalf of a larger group of authors, including Rolando Coto-Solano (Dartmouth University), Gwendolyn Tait (University of Washington), and Violet King (University of Hawai’i at M\u0101noa). The talk<\/a> Quartz and Ake gave was titled “Using Automatic Speech Recognition for documentation of Cook Islands M\u0101ori” and it explained the workflow the group has been using to expedite documentation of M\u0101ori ‘Avaiki Nui (Cook Islands M\u0101ori).<\/p>\n
