precarious<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> border between human bodies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and nonhuman natures. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> geographic borders, this one is more permeable <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than it appears, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> regularly traversed by <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">materials that are both<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">biologically <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">necessary <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(oxygen, food, water) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and harmful <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(industrial chemicals, airborne particulates, vir<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uses)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nvironmental justice scholars have long demonstrated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the more <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">harmful exposures <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are unevenly distributed across social worlds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, falling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> disproportionately on the shoulders of racialized, Indigenous, and poor communities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yet at the same time,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the very distinction between <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">human and nonhuman bodies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">liberal <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">premise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the separat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> self,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">denies the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">metabolic inextricability <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of biological relatio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ns<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and risks<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">violent <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disavowal<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">political <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that rest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unfamiliar intimacies\u2014intimacies that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">may <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">appear <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">menacing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, even toxic, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">within <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">normative scien<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tific orders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nonetheless <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mitigate <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">harm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the context of uneven environmental exposures and proliferating technoscientific \u201csolutions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">where do we draw lines to distinguish between the<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">embodied self<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">and material <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nature<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, between <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">noxious <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">nurturing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">intimacies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">What <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the political stakes of these decisions?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This conference examines the intimate entanglements of human and nonhuman natures in the context of everyday exposures to toxins in air, water, food, soil, and infrastructure. Environmental injustices are always intimate in that they leave material traces in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bod<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in forms <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">such as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reduced <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pulmonary <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">capacity, de<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rmatological <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lesions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and cancerous cells<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
