\"\"Porous skins, digestive tracts, and pulmonary <\/span>tissues <\/span>trac<\/span>e <\/span>a precarious<\/span> border between human bodies <\/span>and nonhuman natures. <\/span>Like all<\/span> geographic borders, this one is more permeable <\/span>than it appears, <\/span>a<\/span>nd<\/span> is<\/span> regularly traversed by <\/span>materials that are both<\/span> biologically <\/span>necessary <\/span>(oxygen, food, water) <\/span>and harmful <\/span>(industrial chemicals, airborne particulates, vir<\/span>uses)<\/span>.<\/span> E<\/span>nvironmental justice scholars have long demonstrated<\/span> that <\/span>the more <\/span>harmful exposures <\/span>are unevenly distributed across social worlds<\/span>, falling<\/span> disproportionately on the shoulders of racialized, Indigenous, and poor communities<\/span>. <\/span>Yet at the same time,<\/span> the very distinction between <\/span>human and nonhuman bodies<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> the <\/span>liberal <\/span>premise<\/span> of the separat<\/span>e<\/span> self,<\/span> denies the <\/span>metabolic inextricability <\/span>of biological relatio<\/span>ns<\/span> and risks<\/span> violent <\/span>disavowal<\/span> of <\/span>political <\/span>communit<\/span>ies<\/span> that rest<\/span> on <\/span>unfamiliar intimacies\u2014intimacies that <\/span>may <\/span>appear <\/span>menacing<\/span>, even toxic, <\/span>within <\/span>normative scien<\/span>tific orders<\/span>, but <\/span>that <\/span>nonetheless <\/span>mitigate <\/span>harm<\/span>.<\/span> In the context of uneven environmental exposures and proliferating technoscientific \u201csolutions<\/span>,\u201d<\/span> where do we draw lines to distinguish between the<\/span> embodied self<\/span> and material <\/span>nature<\/span>s<\/span>, between <\/span>noxious <\/span>and<\/span> nurturing <\/span>intimacies<\/span>?<\/span> What <\/span>are<\/span> the political stakes of these decisions?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This conference examines the intimate entanglements of human and nonhuman natures in the context of everyday exposures to toxins in air, water, food, soil, and infrastructure. Environmental injustices are always intimate in that they leave material traces in <\/span>the <\/span>bod<\/span>y<\/span>, <\/span>in forms <\/span>such as <\/span>reduced <\/span>pulmonary <\/span>capacity, de<\/span>rmatological <\/span>lesions<\/span>,<\/span> and cancerous cells<\/span>. Building on <\/span>this embodied approach, t<\/span>his<\/span> conference<\/span> also explores the intimate ways that toxic matters and toxic knowledges are politically animated in <\/span>everyday<\/span> configurations of social life, as well as struggles over <\/span>sovereignty, public space, and citizenship.<\/span> How ar<\/span>e toxic matters <\/span>simultaneously <\/span>remaking <\/span>human bodies<\/span> and <\/span>emergent <\/span>social <\/span>formations<\/span>? <\/span>In the wake of<\/span> exposure, how do <\/span>communities condense around particular senses of what is harmful or healthful, and how do they remember or mobilize around shared histories of <\/span>bodily subjection?<\/span> How do <\/span>technoscientific practices of containment<\/span>, mobilized either to reduce harm or reduce social contestation, <\/span>shape<\/span> baselines for \u201csafe\u201d exposure and <\/span>normalize specific typologies of harm?<\/span> Working at the intersection between nature, science, and justice, this conference rethinks <\/span>what politics can look like<\/span> in the aftermath of <\/span>embodied and place-based <\/span>contamination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>his<\/span> conference overlaps <\/span>with a graduate seminar taught by Dr. Andrea Marston in Spring 2021<\/span> titled <\/span>Nature, Technoscience, Justice. <\/span><\/i>The <\/span>s<\/span>tudents enrolled in th<\/span>e <\/span>seminar are participating in the conference as moderators<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
