{"id":365,"date":"2020-07-09T16:56:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T16:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/maria-kouneli\/?page_id=365"},"modified":"2023-12-23T10:39:32","modified_gmt":"2023-12-23T10:39:32","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/maria-kouneli\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"C9DxTc \">My main research interests lie in theoretical syntax and morphology. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">I am particularly interested in questions pertaining to the division of labor between different modules: how important is the role of syntax in the architecture of grammar and what does the interface with morphology and phonology look like? <\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Specific empirical domains that I have worked on include the structure of noun phrases, argument structure, and complementation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"C9DxTc \">I believe in the value of data from understudied languages, and this is why my work is based on data from fieldwork (though I occasionally also work on Modern Greek,\u00a0 my native language). My main focus is on the severely underdescribed and understudied Nilotic languages, and especially Kalenjin languages\/dialects. <\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Since 2015 I have been doing\u00a0 fieldwork on the <\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc aw5Odc \">Kipsigis<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \"> dialect of Kalenjin in Kenya and the US, and between 2021 and 2023 I was the PI of a <\/span><a class=\"XqQF9c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.philol.uni-leipzig.de\/en\/institute-of-linguistics\/research\/ru-cyclic-optimization\/layers-of-morphosyntactic-number-in-eastern-sudanic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"C9DxTc aw5Odc \">DFG-funded project on grammatical number in Eastern Sudanic languages<\/span><\/a><span class=\"C9DxTc \">, through which I started fieldwork on another two Kalenjin dialects (Endo-Marakwet and Pokot).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/maria-kouneli\/publications\/\">here<\/a> for a list of publications and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/maria-kouneli\/selected-presentations\/\">here<\/a> for handouts\/slides that have not turned into papers (yet).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My main research interests lie in theoretical syntax and morphology.
