The role of clouds in our society is incalculable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The precipitation\u00a0<\/span>that they produce is\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>lifeblood\u00a0<\/span>of our continents<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>without\u00a0<\/span>help from\u00a0<\/span>clouds<\/span>\u00a0life may never have migrated from the sea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It is even possible that life itself was born in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>clouds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Temperatures on our planet continue to warm due to the accumulation of Carbon Dioxide and other anthropogenic greenhouse gases in our atmosphere that are bioproducts of the combustion of fossil fuels.\u00a0 Observations and climate models show that as our atmosphere is warming it is becoming more moist, but there is no clear understanding of the evolution of the Earth’s cloud systems as our atmosphere warms and moistens.\u00a0 Do some regions have more clouds in the future while other regions have less?\u00a0 This question motivates much of our research.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Accompanying a warming climate induced by human activity is a necessary move toward planetary net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0 Failure to reach this goal within the next decade or two will ensure undesired and significant changes in the physical and socioeconomic structure of our planet. Achieving this goal will require conservation, reducing the use of fossil fuels, and increasing the use of alternative energy.\u00a0 Solar and wind power involve radiation transfer and boundary layer physics, which form the foundation of our research, so we apply our expertise to increase the use and efficiency of solar panel arrays and wind generation systems.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
