Matt Mleczko

I am a Post-Doctoral Associate at Rutgers University jointly appointed between the Ralph W. Voorhees Center for Civic Engagement (in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy) and the Center for State Health Policy through the Rutgers Housing and Health Equity Cluster. I received my Ph.D. in Population Studies and Social Policy from Princeton University in 2024 and received the 2023 Irving Louis Horowitz Award from the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy for the overall most outstanding dissertation. I am also affiliated with The Eviction Lab at Princeton University.

I study integration, housing, poverty, and inequality, with a particular focus on the role of housing policies in fostering equitably integrated and cohesive communities. My research agenda seeks to further our understanding of how housing policies and practices that promote integration can advance equity, improve intergroup relations, and nurture social cohesion within and across communities. Through this work, I created and made publicly available the National Zoning and Land Use Database, a database of zoning and land use policies covering the period between 2019-2022 for over 2,600 municipalities across the United States, which enables deeper study of a key barrier to neighborhood integration. I also study other dimensions of housing, including homelessness and the effectiveness of permanent supportive housing in promoting housing stability and reducing ethnoracial health disparities.

Community engagement is central to my work. My ongoing commitments include my membership as a steering committee member of New Jersey Future’s “Great Neighborhoods for All/NJ – Affordable, Healthy, Connected” initiative, my founding role in Princeton University’s SPIA in NJ program, and my role as founder of Princeton GROWS, a pro-housing advocacy group.

See my CV and Research page for more information about my published work and ongoing projects.
