Prof. Gary D. Farney is a specialist in the ancient Mediterranean, his research focusing on the archaeology of Italy and ancient Mediterranean ethnic identity. Over his career he has been a fellow at the American Academy in Rome, the American School for Classical Studies in Athens, and at the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations in Istanbul. In the area of global education, he has served as a faculty-member for the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (operated by Duke University) for one year (2000-2001) and operated three separate study abroad programs for Rutgers over fourteen summers, from 2005 to the present. His Archaeological Field School in Italy is, by enrollment, the largest faculty-led study abroad program within all of Rutgers University; it has been in operation since 2012. He has also been involved in the development of other study abroad programs for Rutgers, including the advancement of partnerships in Italy (John Cabot University, ICCS-Rome, Kent State-Florence, Palazzo Rucellai-Florence), Greece (College Year in Athens, American College of Thessaloniki), Turkey (Koç University-Istanbul) and recently Malta (University of Malta). He has also served in a formal administrative capacity as the Senior Advisor for Global Initiatives for the Graduate School-Newark, helping to evaluate and develop programming for graduate departments including being the Newark advisor for the Fulbright program. Prof. Farney has regularly acted as a liaison for Newark with Rutgers Global and participated in numerous staff searches and faculty committees on behalf of Newark.
