Brian Philips Murphy is a historian of early America whose current research focuses on the political ecology of the Passaic River, where the rise of American industrialization was directly linked to migration from the Mediterranean region. He was director (2016-2020) of Rutgers-Newark’s Honors College, where he led a collaborative curricular redesign that resulted in the launch of interdisciplinary first-year humanities colloquia and faculty-mentored undergraduate research experiences. He is currently a special advisor to the Chancellor working on a civics and climate initiative supported by the Teagle Foundation, and is a co-director of the Rutgers University program in Malta and Sicily.
