Middle Eastern Islamic Studies Minor<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Middle Eastern Islamic Studies Minor<\/a><\/p>\n

The Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS)<\/strong> minor at Rutgers University-Newark is committed to several educational goals: (1) to provide our students with knowledge of the history and culture of Middle Eastern countries and Islamic civilization, with a strong global and interdisciplinary focus; (2) to provide our students with knowledge of the history and culture of Middle Eastern and\/or Muslim populations in the United States, as well as their political and economic situation; (3) to provide rigorous liberal-arts training to students enrolled in the minor by honing critical thinking and writing skills; (4) to develop our students\u2019 academic proficiency in languages of the Middle East; (5) to give students an introduction to the modes of inquiry of several academic disciplines through the lens of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies.<\/p>\n

Ancient and Medieval Civilizations Minor<\/a><\/p>\n

The interdepartmental undergraduate minor in Ancient and Medieval Civilizations (AMC)<\/strong> encourages students to study the interrelations among the civilizations of Eurasia and North Africa, and to appreciate how this exchange facilitated material and intellectual development from ancient times through the Middle Ages. These civilizations are approached through courses in history, language and literature, art and archaeology, religion and myth, and law and philosophy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rutgers University Field School in Italy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Rutgers University Archaeology Field School in Italy<\/a><\/p>\n

Rutgers University Archaeological Field School in Italy<\/strong><\/em>, in operation since 2012, is a Rutgers Study Abroad summer program that teaches undergraduate and graduate students archaeological field skills and methods. Among these are: excavation techniques; site recording and management skills; the handling, processing and preserving of site materials, such as mosaics, painted wall plaster, pottery, human remains and other small finds. Student participants will acquire this training by doing these things on site in Italy under the supervision of academic and professional field specialists.<\/p>\n
