Art & Design Summer Intensives for

Middle and High School Artists

 

Please Note: Art & Design camps are commuter day camps. There is no on-site housing available.
Morning sessions run from 9:00am – 12:30pm. Afternoon sessions run from 1pm – 4pm.
All-day sessions run from 9:00am – 4pm.
All materials provided as needed, including art supplies, computers, and software.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

 

Middle School Intro to Character Design (rising 5th – rising 8th grade)
July 8 – July 12 | 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Camp Fee: $350

Begin your journey toward character creation, world-making, and storytelling! By learning the art of character design, storyboarding, and illustration, students will obtain a basic grasp of comics, animation, and moviemaking. Students who are passionate about creating their own fictional stories and who enjoy working with others to manifest their visions are encouraged to enroll. Basic drawing and observational skills will be covered to give students the necessary tools for expressing their vision. No prior drawing experience is required, and all are welcome to be part of the community!


Middle School Drawing & Painting Intensive
(rising 5th – rising 8th grade)
July 15 – July 19 | 9:00 AM to 4:00 PMCamp Fee: $350

Students develop their drawing and painting skills through observation, memory, imagination, and experimentation. Academic and experimental approaches will be offered. Experimental approaches may include visualizing sounds, exploring the sense of time and change, different qualities of light and shadow, and color through abstraction. Students develop individual projects that will incorporate all basic drawing and painting course material. Art history will also be discussed as it relates to each project. Personal exploration through materials and process is encouraged. Previous experience with drawing and painting is helpful but not required.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

Week 1

Hands-on studio art course for dedicated high school students with some experience in the visual arts. This course is designed for students who wish to develop their awareness and abilities in drawing, as well as for those considering applying to art school in the future. Focus is on observational and realistic drawing. Students will learn various drawing and shading techniques, with some opportunities to explore personal imagination and artistic experimentation. Participants will receive feedback on their artwork from a professional working artist. Contemporary art and art history will be discussed.


Painting
(rising 9th – rising 12th grade)
July 8 – July 12 | 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Camp Fee: $350

Focus is on observational painting, with some opportunities to explore personal imagination and artistic experimentation. Students learn various techniques in color mixing and composition. Participants will receive feedback on their artwork from a professional working artist. Contemporary art and art history will be discussed.

Week 2

2D Animation
(rising 9th – rising 12th grade)
July 15 – July 19 |9:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Camp Fee: $350

This program is designed for students at any level of videomaking experience who are interested in creating digital moving images. Students will learn narrative development, character design, storyboarding, stop motion, and editing. Prior drawing experience is helpful but not necessary.


3D Animation
(rising 9th – rising 12th grade)
July 15 – July 19 | 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Camp Fee: $350

This course will introduce students to the history, principles, terms, and practices of analog and digital 3D animation in visual art and film. Students will complete a series of motion studies, learn how to develop concepts/characters, and storyboard their own time-based works. They will gain familiarity with 3D animation software and experiment with several modeling materials. Classes will include a mix of screenings, discussions, material and software demonstrations, in-class projects, and individual and group exercises. No prior experience required.

 

Week 3

Graphic Design Web & Print Intensive
(rising 9th – rising 12th grade)
July 22 – July 26 | 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Camp Fee: $575

Sharpen design skills this summer and learn the fundamentals of web and print design. Graphic Web Design introduces HTML and CSS, the basic tools for creating websites. Emphasis is on building awareness of sequence and hierarchy, the Web, and on making software that serves the designer’s vision. A series of short exercises lead up to creating a collaborative online publication. Graphic Print Design focuses on the core principles of print design and an introduction to Adobe Photoshop and InDesign to produce work suitable for a college admissions portfolio. This class will involve hands-on exercises focused on acquiring strong foundational skills, and will consist of tutorials, demonstrations and both in-class and homework exercises. The final outcome of students’ work will consist of a printed publication. Beginner-through-advanced levels of technical proficiency are welcome.
