The following was presented as preparation for Fall 2020:

In response to current circumstances, the jazz program has taken a stance that “returning to normal” is beyond our grasp at the moment, considering there is no guarantee or metric to gauge it by. It is important for students to understand that the goal is not merely to virtualize our regular live curriculum or attempt to match in-person collaborations, which does not encompass our vision of the program.

We are instead leveraging this opportunity to gear the curriculum toward developing the 21st-century technical savvy required of all working musicians going forward. Therefore, in addition to traditional jazz studies, we are also preparing students with essential audio and production tech skills demanded in the industry and in our current world. This expertise is invaluable as we now enter new definitions of work and “gigs” and, will remain relevant as we eventually return to some form of normalcy in the hopeful future.

We hope students will consider these things as they make decisions about their studies and remain engaged alongside their fellow music peers. We thank all students for their courage and determination to proceed forward. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your instructors and directors for further assistance.
