Requirements

The undergraduate mentor guide is designed to help students concentrate on three (3) musical artist mentors each semester, for a total of 24 artists by graduation, to be studied under the direction of their private lesson instructor.

In general, it is necessary to retain at least the following for each artist:

  • Full Name
  • Genre/Era
  • Birth year and location
  • Death year
  • Style famous for
  • Ensembles known for
  • One transcription of each artist (3 total), both written and performed. Each one must be;
    • At least 36 bars in length, or
    • 3 choruses of a Blues solo

This study should be incorporated into the student’s weekly instrumental lesson, so that students play music of the artists, in addition to retaining facts about them.

Students are expected to independently prepare and present each semesters’ required work to his/her studio professor. As a portion of your lesson grade for each semester, the following is to be electronically submitted to your studio professor no later than the last day of class:

  • a written historical summary of artists studied, and
  • a PDF copy of the latest written transcriptions
