Private Instruction
Private lessons start on the second Monday of each semester. Lesson times are set after placement audition results are posted on the first Monday. Scheduling is based on ensemble timings, and there’s ample time to confirm lessons after the results are available. While it is acceptable to discuss tentative lesson scheduling options with your instructor before the auditions, these options will still be subject to the conditions outlined above.
Assignments / Responsibilities
Private lesson grades include the instructor’s evaluation of each student’s attendance, preparedness, and progress on a semesterly basis. In addition to the instructor’s directed study, private lessons include the following graded components:
- Jury Scale and Chord outlines, and sight-reading studies
- Five (5) Jury Tune Selections as specified on the jury requirements page
- Artist/Mentor Studies, for Undergrads / for Grads
- Jury Keyboard Exam requirements for non-piano majors
Note: The Rutgers Jazz Lesson Log helps structure weekly lessons in accordance with these guides.
Jury Exams
Juries are held at the end of the semester exam periods, Fall and Spring terms, RHL209, 9:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. A jury signup form will be posted on the jazz bulletin board every late semester to reserve a jury slot. Depending on faculty availability, certain instruments will be required to attend on specific days. Details will be posted a few weeks in advance of the jury.
