Undergraduate Mentor Study

Private lesson instructors may wish to incorporate artist mentor studies into their weekly lesson plans to help students gain valuable historical jazz knowledge and develop their technical approach. To support this study, the undergraduate mentor guide is created to focus on three (3) musical artist mentors each semester, aiming for a total of 24 artists by graduation, as determined by their instructor. Mentor attributes may include:

  • Full Name
  • Genre/Era
  • Birth year and location
  • Death year
  • Style famous for
  • Ensembles known for
  • One transcription of each artist (3 total), both written and performed

It is recommended that students independently prepare and present each semester’s required work to his/her studio professor by the last lesson day of each semester, as follows:

  • a written historical summary of artists studied, and
  • a PDF copy of the latest written transcriptions
