Who: Required of all jazz majors. Non-major ensemble participants are encouraged to attend.

What: While containing some review of material from last year, this year’s JazzTech Camp is updated to prepare us for the new term and new realities of our day. All jazz majors are to attend the meetings and complete the online training. Given the advanced notice we had provided for these virtual meeting days, we ask that you work out your schedule to attend both 1.5-hour sessions.

The two-day MGSA JazzTech Camp provides pre-semester technology training on the tools and procedures required of all jazz majors and demanded in our current world. The advent of virtual learning throughout the previous year made the necessity of acquiring, learning, and using personal technology a sobering reality. As we anticipate returning to live rehearsals and performances as of the fall, jazz majors will continue to be assigned virtual projects each semester to hone their acquired technical skills and maintain what has been learned from the previous year. Incoming students will also use these sessions as a primer.

With this in mind, the camp will provide students the opportunity to learn, review, and test hardware and software in advance of the start of classes. Students are advised to obtain/update needed gear in advance of the camp. Refer to the Virtual Technology Requirements page for more details.

The first day will consist of a brief live call meeting to guide posted Canvas instructional materials, and training projects covering fundamentals of audio theory, recording technology, and best practices. A live call meeting will encompass the entire second and final camp day providing the opportunity to expand on topics, review project submissions, discuss and resolve technical issues, and answer questions as a group.
