{"id":680,"date":"2022-02-26T20:04:24","date_gmt":"2022-02-26T20:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/?p=680"},"modified":"2023-08-07T14:33:51","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T14:33:51","slug":"lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started working on a category of pigments called &#8220;lakes,&#8221; a name for insoluble pigments made from organic dyes.\u00a0 Virtually everything in nature gives some sort of color; it&#8217;s just that most of those colors aren&#8217;t very interesting.\u00a0 Some, however, are almost incredible.\u00a0 It is possible, for instance, that the red of the marbled page is one of the red substances which, only by virtue of their astonishing hue, shaped colonial history and the early modern rise of globalism.\u00a0 These are two colors made from insect sources: cochineal, from the high deserts of Central America, and the secretions of <em>Kerria lacca<\/em>, a prized red called &#8220;lac&#8221; which kindly donated its name to the general category name &#8220;lake.&#8221;\u00a0 Each was available in eighteenth-century colormen&#8217;s shops, though, as Robert Dossie notes, they were probably &#8220;too dear&#8221; for use in marbling.\u00a0 Lakes made from either madder or brazilwood shavings were more affordable&#8211; so much so that they were sometimes mixed in with cochineal or made to pass for the genuine article.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be experimenting with lakes over the next week or so.\u00a0 (Next week, I&#8217;ll be making some paint.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-683\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-683\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/IMG_4827-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not yet a striking color: 150 ml of brazilwood dye in the recovery flask, after an hour of boiling and filtering.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So far, most of the pigments I&#8217;ve created in the Motley Lab are inexpensive pigments called &#8220;pinks.&#8221;\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/dutch-pink\/\">pink<\/a> is any organic dye which is precipitated on a colorless earth. \u00a0Sterne&#8217;s contemporaries extracted calcium from chalk, cuttlefish bone, or eggshells and worked out ways of bonding the dyes to these colorless media by way of a bridging ion in a process called mordanting. \u00a0The process is essentially the same as the one used by dyers.\u00a0 First a dyebath is created by extracting the tincture through boiling and adding a mordant; the mordant, a substance like potash alum, donates a metallic ion to make a future bridge between each dye molecule and the textile proteins.\u00a0 At this point, the dye-bath would be ready to take an article of clothing or other textile article.\u00a0 A pink is made simply by substituting chalk for the cloth; this is &#8220;lake,&#8221; from <em>lac<\/em>, the secretions of the <em>Kerria lacca<\/em>, the parasitic insect native to India.\u00a0 In its purest, most processed form, lac is nearly clear; I first encountered lac resin as a furniture-maker, when we would dissolve it in denatured alcohol and use the mixture to seal open woodgrain.\u00a0 But lac in its raw state, sometimes called &#8220;stick-lac,&#8221; The unpromising amber extract has transformed into a rich organic dye.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lakes use the same dye sources as pinks, but render them insoluble in a different way.\u00a0 Rather than bonding dye molecules to an earth-metal by way of a bridging ion (dye+metallic ion+earth), a lake bonds the dye molecule to the bridging ion and then neutralizes the compound (dye+neutralized ion&#8211; though the actual molecular structure is <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1039\/b104595b\">significantly more complex<\/a>).\u00a0 Most colormen in Dossie&#8217;s day used an aqueous solution of pearl ash for this purpose; pearl ash is simply wood ashes that have been purified through calcination, leaving mostly just potassium carbonate.\u00a0 But most simple alkalis will work, since the purpose of the alkali is only to donate oxygen and hydrogen to the aluminum ion, rendering it chemically inert.\u00a0 Once that happens, the newly neutralized dye-alumina compound becomes insoluble, and settles to the bottom of the mixture as a (wet) powder, where it can be collected.\u00a0 Everything else&#8211; water, the metallic salt left over from the reaction&#8211; remains in solution, as a waste product of the laking process.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-693\" style=\"width: 164px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-693\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/Reynolds-Anne-Dashwood-detail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/Reynolds-Anne-Dashwood-detail.jpg 1801w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/Reynolds-Anne-Dashwood-detail-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/Reynolds-Anne-Dashwood-detail-901x1024.jpg 901w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/Reynolds-Anne-Dashwood-detail-768x873.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/02\/Reynolds-Anne-Dashwood-detail-1351x1536.jpg 1351w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne Dashwood, painted by Joshua Reynolds during his &#8220;addiction&#8221; to lakes. The extreme pallor of her complexion&#8211; and also of the botanicals she holds&#8211; is due to the fading of these fugitive pigments.\u00a0 (Image from Met Museum.\u00a0 Click to link)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Probably because they lack the additional white reflectiveness of the earth metal (like calcium), lakes are more transparent than pinks.\u00a0 This is why they were prized by painters, who would often use them in glazes over mineral grounds\u2014like reds over white lead to mimic a complexion.\u00a0 But this brightness and transparency comes with the same cost as pinks; like all things in nature, lakes fade.\u00a0 Joshua Reynolds was one of many artists who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/media\/23860\/volume35essay2reynoldstech.pdf\">ground (red) lake<\/a> in linseed oil as a glaze for drapery or flesh\u2014and the extreme pallor of some of his subjects derives from his dedication to a lake pigment made from cochineal, which fades from exposure to light.\u00a0 Lakes fade while doing the very thing they are meant to do&#8211; (Photo by author for the Motley Emblem)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Normally, this is where I include the recipe that I&#8217;ve used.\u00a0 This time, I&#8217;m going to do something a little different.\u00a0 Lakes are the kinds of things that can be done in the kitchen, and they&#8217;re safe enough that they can be made with kids.\u00a0 My lab assistant (for instance) is nine years old.\u00a0 So I&#8217;ve put together a generic recipe loosely based on Robert Dossie&#8217;s industrial process.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible to make any color extracted from a plant: coffee for browns; marigold petals or pomegranate skins (dried or not) for yellows; beets or red cabbage for reds, and so on.\u00a0 Lakes aren&#8217;t paints; the pigment has to be added to a medium (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schmincke.de\/en\/products\/mediums\/binders\/watercolour-binder-ready-to-use.html\">Schminke&#8217;s ready-to-use binder<\/a>, or a mixture of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/motley-emblem\/gum-arabic\/\">gum arabic and sugar candy<\/a>) to make something that can be painted with.\u00a0 But making a lake is one way to create colors from raw reagents, which is another way of saying that it is the sort of practical chemistry that little lab assistants enjoy.\u00a0 This is a loose recipe.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Grind the reagent source, or cut it in small pieces. Aim for roughly 20 grams of reagents if dried, and about twice that if fresh or wet.<\/li>\n<li>Boil the dye source in roughly 200ml water for one hour, and filter it through a paper coffee filter while hot. If your coffee filter is perforated, you can use any other filter medium, like linen cloth.<\/li>\n<li>Discard the dye source, but retain the aqueous solution of dye.<\/li>\n<li>Add 25 grams of alum to the aqueous dye solution, and stir until dissolved.\u00a0 At this point, instead of making a lake pigment, the dyebath could be used to dye some small textiles&#8211; like table napkins.<\/li>\n<li>Mix 15 grams of washing soda in about 125ml warm water.<\/li>\n<li>Slowly add the washing soda solution to the dye solution, while mixing. Some foaming will occur.\u00a0 As the alkaline washing soda neutralizes the acidic dye solution, it releases carbon dioxide as a gas.\u00a0 This is harmless&#8211; but can get messy.\u00a0 Continue stirring and knocking back the foam.\u00a0 Add washing soda until the reaction ceases or the soda solution is exhausted.<\/li>\n<li>Allow to cool and to settle. Filter through a fresh coffee filter or filter and cloth, collecting the pigment in the filter.<\/li>\n<li>Lay out on a clean plate to dry, then grind to a powder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started working on a category of pigments called &#8220;lakes,&#8221;
