Executive Board Reports: Keeping the Mission in Focus

SGA President Wardah Samad reinforced the organization’s commitment to student advocacy and engagement. With Senator Training scheduled for February 5 in HLLC 214, SGA members are preparing for the semester ahead. The highly anticipated SGA Team Bonding/Vision Board event has been postponed to February 13 at Usquare MPR.

Vice President Savayra Rao provided updates on the Project Dental All Event, an initiative focused on student health awareness. Meanwhile, Chief of Finance Shaheer Iqbal unveiled the 2024-2025 Student Governing Association Budget Sheet, ensuring transparency in financial planning.

Executive Secretary May Akter introduced a Senate Point Tracking Sheet, which will monitor engagement levels among senators. The tracking system aims to hold members accountable and reward active participation.

Committee Updates: Pushing for Progress

  • Food & Shelter Insecurity Committee (Chair: Alya Nassrallah): Negotiating prices for water refill stations and collaborating with the Chief of Finance to plan winter distribution this semester. Legislation will be presented next week.
  • Audit/Bylaw Review Committee (Chair: Adrian Henry): Aiming to finalize bylaws by March.
  • Public Relations Committee (Chair: Savan Dass): Assigning website updates and committee tasks.
  • Health Services Committee: Held its first meeting to outline semester goals.
  • Diversity & Inclusion, Voter Registration, and Environmental Committees: Awaiting further updates.

Key Decisions and Votes

SGA GBM Breakfast Approved!

Senator Adrian Henry introduced legislation to provide breakfast during SGA meetings. After a brief debate over food options and purchasing responsibilities, the measure passed. Expect to see a breakfast spread at future meetings!


SGA Takes a Stand on ICE Raids & Undocumented Student Safety

Senator Rania Ragoub introduced a resolution urging SGA to release a formal statement on ICE raids and undocumented student safety. The discussion lasted six minutes. The resolution ultimately passed, marking a firm stance on student protection.


Budget Allocation Vote: Option B Wins

The biggest financial decision of the night revolved around allocating funds between SGA and student organizations. Two options were on the table:

  • Option A: 77.5% to student organizations ($142,910), SGA Fund: $91,490.
  • Option B: 80% to student organizations ($147,520), SGA Fund: $86,880.

After discussion over funding priorities and semester rollovers, the senate voted for Option B, ensuring more resources go directly to student organizations.


Senate Speaker Vote: Alya Nassrallah Takes the Helm

Following unanimous decision, Community Outreach Senator Alya Nassrallah was elected Senate Speaker for the spring session, further solidifying her leadership within SGA.


New Business & Open Discussion

  • Senator Absence Excusal: AJ Ibrahim was excused from the February 3rd meeting due to a mandatory LPLC program session.
  • NJPIRG Endorsement: Legislation supporting the NJPIRG Project passed successfully.
  • SASN University Senator Nominations: Multiple candidates were nominated, but deliberations were postponed for further discussion.
