Graduate students are selected for their academic skill set and initial research training, which allows them to connect geoscience practice to societal needs. While they are still developing professionally and as scientists, they are at a formative stage where they can shape their careers and contribute to the discipline. As such, they are well-positioned to influence geoscience research and culture and to become leaders in the field. Compared to faculty, they represent the future geoscience workforce in terms of diversity and core values. They can meaningfully connect with and inspire younger and aspiring geoscientists.<\/p>\n

The NewGeo graduate student environment-community-outreach graduate assistants (ECO GAs) leverage their academic preparation and build career skills through embedded community-based internships or projects, K-12 outreach, volunteerism, undergraduate mentoring, and professional and leadership development.<\/p>\n
