Investing in Our Shared Soil &amp; Sustaining Our Movements.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This event, co-hosted by the HAL Free School and the Price Institute, brought together participants of all ages to reflect on how plants like the sunflower can <strong>heal our soil<\/strong> and how <strong>mutual aid<\/strong> can strengthen our relationships and sustain community movements.<\/p>\n<h3>\ud83d\udd2c NewGeo Soil Testing Station: Using Science to Serve the Community<\/h3>\n<p>As part of our mission to connect scientific tools with community knowledge, the NewGeo team set up an interactive <strong>soil analysis station<\/strong> featuring our <strong>X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer<\/strong>. Community members were invited to <strong>bring soil from their homes or gardens<\/strong>, which we tested on site for heavy metals and other key indicators of soil health.<\/p>\n<p>Our team also led conversations around:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2697\ufe0f The importance of soil testing in urban environments<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf31 Understanding soil quality and contamination risks<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf3f How composting, planting, and soil restoration support environmental justice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\ud83c\udf0d Collaboration for Healing and Action<\/h3>\n<p>This workshop was a collaborative effort, featuring insights from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Omnajana Goswami<\/strong> \u2013 Union of Concerned Scientists<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chef Tara Addison<\/strong> \u2013 Elegant Bouquet Kitchen<\/li>\n<li><strong>Newark Water Coalition<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mutual Morris<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Together, we explored the intersection of food, environment, and justice\u2014while inspiring attendees to take steps to care for the ecosystems around them.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>\ud83d\udccd Event Details:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Date:<\/strong> Thursday, April 17th, 2025<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time:<\/strong> 3:00 PM \u2013 5:00 PM<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Price Institute Healing Garden, 49 Bleeker Street, Newark, NJ 07102<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>\ud83d\udcac Interested in bringing NewGeo\u2019s soil testing activities to your garden, classroom, or community event? <strong>Contact us<\/strong> to learn how we collaborate with local partners to build environmental knowledge from the ground up.<\/p>\n<p><em>NewGeo is a National Science Foundation-supported experiential learning program connecting Rutgers-Newark students with local communities to address environmental and climate justice challenges.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, April 17th, 2025, NewGeo joined a powerful lineup of community leaders, scientists, and educators at the Price Institute Healing Garden for the workshop \u201cWhere Does the Sunflower Go? &hellip;
