The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that influence whether ED nurses perform HIV screening for their patients.

In her work as an emergency nurse, Candice Elam observed that whether emergency department (ED) patients undergo HIV screening varies within a particular hospital and among different hospitals. She became interested in understanding the reasons for variability in ED-based HIV screening.This study was a conducted to fulfill the graduation requirement for the Rutgers University Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

This study involved a 30-45-minute Web-based survey, comprised of many closed-ended questions (multiple choice/yes-no/Likert scale) and an optional open-ended question. After survey completion, there was a 2-minute evaluation of the survey and topic. The survey was accessible via computer or mobile device.

No. Participants were not compensated for their participation. At the end of the survey, participants had the option to enter a raffle for a chance to win 1 of 2 $100 Amazon gift cards. The raffle drawing was held in early 2021 and winners were notified by email.

This study carried the risk of breach of confidentiality. In order to minimize that risk, participants were not asked to share their names or other identifying information during survey completion. Additionally survey data was collected and stored in a password-protected platform called REDCap. Participants who choose to enter into the raffle submitted their email addresses, which were stored separately from the survey responses.
