In the wild it can be found in swamps, sandy woods, and water edges. Typically, it grows as a multi-stemmed, rounded shrub reaching 3-8 feet tall with a 4-6 foot spread. The plants feature glossy dark green leaves that transition to yellow or golden-brown in autumn. Small, white, intensely fragrant flowers grow in dense clusters producing high-quality nectar and pollen that support butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators July-August. The flowers are followed by dark brown capsules that mature in the fall and provide bird seeds in the winter. It is unique to other flowering shrubs because it blooms in shady locations like forest under-stories when other shrubs have already gone through bloom."}
