data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Host plants<\/span><\/b><b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">: <\/span><\/b>most common on White and Colorado\u00a0spruce species, but sometimes seen on Norway spruce\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Current needle growth has a blue-green color, but older, inner needles lose their desirable color (blue glaucus bloom) and turn pale or even\u00a0yellow.\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">This sometimes becomes dramatic and initiates both aesthetic and plant health\u00a0concerns\u00a0\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Reasons for these symptoms can be from a complex number of conditions, but a\u00a0compromised root system is typically the underlying cause (often excessively wet soils)\u00a0\u200b\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"1170\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"2\">To determine the cause, first eliminate other causes such as the spruce spider mite stippling systems or dormant oil applications that may have removed the waxy bloom growth on the needles\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Compromised root systems result in nutrient deficiencies within the spruce\u00a0\u00a0\u200b\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"1170\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\">The inability of the roots to uptake Potassium (K) or Magnesium (Mg) are often involved\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"1170\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Highly acidic soil pH can also be a factor\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"1170\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Excessively dry or\u00a0wet\u00a0soils will cause inner needle discoloration\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To compensate, the tree creates a self-induced deficiency of potassium (K) to older needles by translocation of K to the newest growth needles\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Pale older needles often never fully\u00a0return back to their previous coloration even after soil conditions are corrected\u00a0\u00a0\u200b\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"1170\" data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Often improves in 2-3 years with new growth\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: inherit;font-size: 1.44em\">Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fertilization\u00a0with\u00a0potassium\u00a0(K)\u00a0will\u00a0not\u00a0solve\u00a0the\u00a0problem\u00a0because the\u00a0cause is from root stress and not a shortage of potassium (K) in the\u00a0soil (usually)\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Excessive nitrogen fertilization\u00a0can make the problem worse\u00a0\u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Rework the soil to improve drainage\u00a0\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>This might be difficult in lower areas with high % clay soils \u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li>(Christmas tree farms must select tree species planting sites carefully)<span data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span>\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: inherit;font-size:
