2032-2629<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h4><strong>Overview:<\/strong>\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>These scales emerge in August and September rather than June &amp; July, as most other soft scale species\u200b<\/li>\n<li>By mid-September, the scales have been undergoing crawler emergence for about a month (Only one generation per year)\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Both scales are found exclusively on woody tissues during all life stages \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Large mature females use their piercing\u00a0 sucking mouthparts to \u200bwithdraw large quantities of sap from the phloem and exude honeydew that grows sooty mold (attracts ants, wasps, bees &amp; other vespids)\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Causes yellowing leaves and premature leaf drop &amp; branch decline \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Mature females have a hemispherical, helmet-like shape &amp; are orange in color \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Crawlers emerge ~ 1-wk before <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/nursery-ipm\/magnolia-scale\/\">Magnolia scale<\/a> crawlers\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Crawlers are dark &amp; about 0.5mm long \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Crawlers die if they do not find a host within three days\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Overwinters as dark 2nd instar nymphs on 1\u20132-year-old branches<\/li>\n<li><strong>Host plants:<\/strong> Found on tulip and magnolia trees, and occasionally yellow poplar, and linden\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Management:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Cultural Practices:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Natural predators:<\/span><\/b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ladybeetles, lacewings, parasitoid wasps\u200b<\/li>\n<li>\u200bUse double-sided sticky tape to monitor\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Reduce plant stress\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Prune heavily infested branches\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Regularly monitor for proper timing of controls\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Control ant populations\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Ants will often protect soft scales because they use honeydew as a food source imidacloprid, dinotefuran\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Organophosphate [1B]: Acephate (translaminar)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"540\" data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Considerations:<\/span><\/b>\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Can harm non-target species-\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Unsightly appearance of sooty mold often causes people to apply treatments too early \u200b<\/li>\n<li>If sprays are applied\u00a0 too early, previously laid eggs may have been protected under the female bodies and may still hatch \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Sprays can be applied during the crawler period but may require multiple treatments \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Sprays can be delayed until mid-October to target vulnerable 2nd instar nymphs \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Biorationals:<\/strong>\u200b<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps will provide good efficacy against 1st or 2nd instars\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Against crawlers, multiple oil\/soap applications may be required\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<figure
