{"id":1406,"date":"2025-08-26T18:21:59","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T18:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/nursery-ipm\/?p=1406"},"modified":"2025-08-27T18:45:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T18:45:32","slug":"snails-and-slugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/nursery-ipm\/snails-and-slugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Snails and Slugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Snails and Slugs (<em>Gastropoda <\/em>spp.)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h4><strong>Overview:<\/strong>\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Mollusks that thrive in cool, wet weather\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Soft, slimy bodies which move using a muscular foot while secreting a silvery \u2003 mucus trail that helps them to move\u00a0 \u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Snails have a visible, coiled shell on their backs, and retract into it when disturbed\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Slugs lack a shell\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Can be any size from under an inch up to around six inches long \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Many slugs reach sexual maturity in 3-6 months and lay eggs \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Snails can take up to 2 years to reach maturity\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Eggs are small, white, and often found in clusters in wet, sheltered locations\u00a0 \u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Slug eggs are more translucent and gelatinous than, while snail eggs are harder and more opaque\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Both snails and slugs are hermaphroditic \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Live in no till or zone till areas under the surface layer of debris or mulch\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Slugs and snails feed most actively at night, but can be found on plants anytime conditions are wet\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Damage on herbaceous plants can appear quite suddenly and presents as irregular holes in the middle of the leaf, not along the edges \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Feeding on dormant buds causes new growth to emerge twisted or ragged \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Feed using rasping mouthparts, mostly eating small plants\u200b<\/li>\n<li><strong>Host plants:<\/strong> Wide variety of plants, particularly soft-leaved plants and seedlings\u200b\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Hosta, violet, ageratum, dahlias, larkspur, daylily, and any annual\/perennial<br \/>\nbed that is heavily mulched \/ moisture laden\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Management:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Cultural Practices:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Natural predators:<\/span><\/b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"> nematodes, sciomyzid flies, ground beetles, rove beetles, firefly larvae, toads, frogs, newts, thrushes, ducks, starlings, blackbirds, snakes, turtles, mice, centipedes, shrews\u200b<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Companion plants: garlic, chives \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Remove mulch to reduce slug and snail habitat\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Avoid consistent overhead irrigation\u00a0 \u00a0\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Monitor fields during wet and cool conditions\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Look for slime trails in the morning\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Create barriers to prevent them from reaching the plants\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Shelter traps, such as square foot shingle or cardboard segments or beer dishes, can be used to monitor for snails and slugs\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Increase sunlight amounts \u2013 pruning and spacing plants, removing shade, etc. \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Residue management\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Soil disturbance\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Hand pick them to remove them\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"111\" data-font=\"Courier New,monospace\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"450\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Molluscicides:<\/span><\/b>\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Iron phosphate\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Stops them from eating \/ modifies metabolism\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Metaldehyde \u200b\n<ul>\n<li>+ Methiocarb [1A]\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Used for a long time \/ some resistance \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Dangerous to other animals\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Acts by stopping the mollusks&#8217;
