306-1370<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Overview:<\/strong>\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Verticillium albo-atrium or Verticillium dahlia\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Soil-borne fungal pathogen that can remain in the soil for up to seven years once infested\u00a0 (i.e. persistent)\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Can overwinter as microsclerotia in the soil\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Prefers cooler weather and drier soil\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Can be more severe in neutral to alkaline soils\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Can be harbored by MANY weeds \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms vary between hosts\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms may occur on branches scattered over the entire tree, or may be confined to one side\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Often first observed during periods of drought stress during summer\/early spring due to fall\/winter drought\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Can cause sudden wilting and yellowing of leaves, leaf scorch, leaf browning, and early death and dropping of leaves\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Can cause branches to fail to leaf out in the spring, or sparse or undersized leaves \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Can cause death to part or all of a plant (can&#8217;t sell)\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Results in discoloration of xylem, as xylem gets clogged up and is unable to transport water\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Green, brown, or black streaks may be present when bark is peeled away from the impacted branches\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Visual symptoms alone are insufficient for diagnosis \u2013 submit samples to diagnostic lab to verify \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Host plants: over 400 species\n<ul>\n<li>Common: Maple, redbud, ash, cherry, smokebush<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: inherit;font-size: 1.44em\">Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No highly effective treatments &#8211; prevention is key\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Get appropriate diagnosis \u2013 ID is critical\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Crop rotation to less susceptible varieties in known infested locations\u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Do not over fertilize (stress) and keep irrigation on &#8216;drier side&#8217;\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Rouge symptomatic plants to reduce the spread of the disease. \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Symptomatic branches:\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Nursery\/greenhouse: indicative of longer-term root \/ vascular tissue infections = rouge plants out\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Landscape: Prune and destroy symptomatic branches, making sure to sanitize pruners between cuts\u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Can apply high N-fertilizer to promote plant growth but just prolonging the inevitable\u00a0 \u00a0 \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Soil treatments: \u200b\n<ul>\n<li>Fumigation \/solarization can reduce the pathogen in the soil\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Removal of soil \/ evaluation of media \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sanitation of infested production equipment: avoid spread it &amp; avoid putting tree back into infested socket-pots\u00a0
