The PRAC places year-long paid interns to work organizing or digitizing collections at the Colección Puertorriqueña of the UPR library and at the AGPR.  We are now expanding to include other archival sites and special collections. The PRAC developed the model in close collaboration with host institution directors to make sure the goals and procedures were clear. Prof. Lauria Santiago recruits the year-long interns from among students and recent graduates in Puerto Rico through a network of professors, with careful attention to previous experience and individual interviews.

An important part of the work is identifying, interviewing, and selecting the interns. A network of professors generate the applications and Prof. Lauria Santiago and staff interview every candidate. The interns are selected not only for their experience and training (majors, courses, work experience, volunteer work, etc.) but also because of the potential for the work and proximity to the participant institutions to yield professional advancement for them.

The year-long interns at the AGPR have worked with over two dozen collections to produce guides and indices and digital collections.  Interns are funded from a variety of resources including faculty research accounts, small grants, and a collaboration with the Fundación Puertorriquena de las Humanidades.  More recently the Mellon foundation has provided major funding to extend the internship program to more sites.
