Researchers need to know the current water properties to be able to compare them to the theoretical water properties of the past. The samples will be analyzed for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), mostly CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a process that has been analyzed in the ocean for decades. The DIC data can help us learn about the global carbon system, and add to the data of DIC trends over time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CTD Cleaned Up\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2eK08z41GVM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The purple cap bottles will be used to track <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u03b4<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 1rem\">13C (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">delta-13 Carbon), a stable carbon isotope found less often when human produced, fossil fuel burning, carbon dioxide is present. Tracking of Carbon-13 in conjunction with DIC data can show the increase from anthropogenic sources of carbon into the water. Want to learn more about the difference in carbon types?
