Dr. Nanda earned his medical degree from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Madras University in India. He completed his residency in Neurosurgery at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1989, and then went on to a fellowship in Microneurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was mentored by Peter J. Jannetta, MD. In 2012, Dr. Nanda earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. As part of his curriculum, he contributed to passing the Louisiana Youth Concussion Law, which requires all schools, clubs and any organization sponsoring youth athletics, to provide athletes and their parents with information about concussions and the potential long-term effects of playing after a head injury. Dr. Nanda served for 27 years as Professor and Chair at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA. In 2003 he established a residency training program, currently the largest in the state, and helped facilitate Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and Neuroendovascular programs in the Department of Neurosurgery.
From July 2018 through April 2022, Dr. Nanda assumed the positions of Chair in the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, as well as Senior Vice President of Neurosurgical Services at RWJBarnabas Health. Throughout his career, Dr. Nanda has published over 560 articles (current h-index 63) in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to authoring over 80 book chapters. He has published four books including “Complications in Neurosurgery” and “Principles of Posterior Fossa Surgery.” Dr. Nanda has held significant leadership roles in professional organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (past secretary); North American Skull Base Society (past president); Southern Neurosurgical Society (past president); World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (past second vice-president); Society of University Neurosurgeons (past president); Louisiana State Neurosurgical Society (past president). He has also served as Director and Vice Chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). Dr. Nanda has performed nearly 18,000 surgeries, 2,000 of which were performed for skull base tumors and aneurysms.
