Rutgers Future Scholars

Operating Status, COVID-19

 

The RFS program will:  
  • Suspend or limit scheduled after-school activities located in our partner schools until on/about April 10 (depends on district spring break schedules).
  • Suspend on-campus RFS-related events involving groups of fifteen or more, such as Saturday Academy, beginning Thursday March 12 through April 15.
  • Re-evaluate offering our signature events taking place at Rutgers after April 15, such as College Signing Day (May 1), Convocation (May 9), and the Welcome Celebration (June 12) our new Scholar induction ceremony. These events have not been cancelled; however, we will be monitoring the developments closely and will provide updates on cancellations and/or postponements at a later date.

Official Statement from Rutgers Future Scholars:

March 11, 2020

Dear Rutgers Future Scholars Community,

We hope you, your families, and friends are doing well during these trying times. It is our top priority to provide safe and healthy spaces for Scholars to continue to grow and learn. The COVID-19 virus has presented an unprecedented challenge for all of us. Rutgers convened a task force under the Office of Emergency Management to develop plans that anticipate probable scenarios of the virus’s effect on the university. On March 10, 2020, Rutgers University’s President Bob Barchi released a list of actions for the Rutgers Community, which includes organizations such as RFS.

As a result of this mandate, coupled with our commitment to the Scholars’ well-being, and the temporary loss of the extraordinary talents of our Undergraduate staff and mentors, the

RFS program will: 

  • Suspend or limit scheduled after-school activities located in our partner schools until on/about April 10 (depends on district spring break schedules) A full listing of events and statuses will be made available here.
  • Suspend on-campus RFS-related events involving groups of fifteen or more, such as Saturday Academy & Girls Knight, beginning Thursday March 12 through April 15.
  • Reevaluate offering our signature events taking place at Rutgers after April 15, such as College Signing Day (May 1), Convocation (May 9), and the Welcome Celebration (June 12) our new Scholar induction ceremony. These events have not been cancelled; however, we will be monitoring evolving developments closely and will provide updates on cancellations and/or postponements at a later date.

RFS offices will remain open until further notice. For safety precautions, we are advising all Scholars, families, and partners to first utilize phone and/or email when communicating with staff until on or about April 3. For ongoing RFS announcements please visit our Facebook or Instagram pages. For Undergraduate Scholars impacted by the sudden directive to vacate Rutgers residence halls, please be sure to communicate directly with your campus housing office to discuss your concerns. We sympathize with the residual effects of this decision on one’s education, as well as your mental and physical health. You are welcome to connect with us and we encourage you to explore the following resources:

Although the spread of COVID-19 appears to have started internationally, it is important to remember that Coronavirus infection is not connected to any race, ethnicity, or nationality. Please remind others to refrain from making assumptions about one’s risk of contracting it based on any of these factors.
