{"id":1221,"date":"2026-02-23T19:00:32","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T19:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/?page_id=1221"},"modified":"2026-03-26T05:25:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T05:25:44","slug":"cognitive-complexity","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/cognitive-complexity\/","title":{"rendered":"Cognitive Complexity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cognitive complexity is an important variable because it relates to perceptions of social justice issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Something has complexity when it involves multiple components or dimensions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cognitive complexity involves holding multidimensional images of the world around us. \u00a0It comes in two forms:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li><em>Representational complexity<\/em>\u00a0 = mental image consisting of multiple objects not a simple average<\/li>\n<li><em>Attributional complexity\u00a0<\/em>= mental image of a person in context rather than an individual in isolation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>Representational Complexity \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Attributional Complexity<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 is your mental representation the form of \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 is your mental representation the form of<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 one overall group \u00a0 &#8211; <em>OR &#8211; <\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0several specific objects \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 a person alone \u00a0 &#8211; <em>OR &#8211; <\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0a person in a situation<\/p>\n<p>. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-539\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2025\/09\/1RubiksCubeUnexploded.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"103\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-941\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/1RubiksCubeExploded-150x150.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"102\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1618 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/03\/StickAlone-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1619 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/03\/StickOthers-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Our research has examined how cognitive complexity relates to prejudice and perceptions of social justice issues. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">People with higher levels of cognitive complexity are lower in prejudice, more likely to notice subtle racism, and more likely to reject other forms of social injustices. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">These outcomes are not just because people who are low in prejudice are more cognitively complex. \u00a0We have manipulated cognitive complexity in the lab, and the result of inducing more complexity is that it leads to less negative views of outgroups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Foels, R.
