{"id":1348,"date":"2026-02-25T17:46:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T17:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/?page_id=1348"},"modified":"2026-03-28T13:47:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T13:47:24","slug":"social-power","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/social-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>S<\/strong><strong>ocial power<\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1368 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTable5b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTable5b.png 520w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTable5b-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080\"> is the ability to influence another person&#8217;s outc<\/span>ome.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This influence could be harmful or beneficial to that p<span style=\"color: #000000\">erson. \u00a0Harmful <em>social power<\/em> is based in blocking a person from meeting a\u00a0<em>need<\/em>\u00a0 (Pratto, 2016).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #a60000\"><span style=\"color: #035903\"><strong>H<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003300\"><strong>uman needs <\/strong>are requirements for surviving or thriving.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Survival (biological) needs include food, water, sleep, and shelter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Thrival (psychological) needs include autonomy of behavior, social bonds, and competent skills (Deci &amp; Ryan, 2000).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Group inequalities are an outcome of the abuse of social power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To understand how different groups have different levels of social power it is useful to understand Ideologies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><em>An <strong>ideology<\/strong> is a socially shared belief of how things should be. <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Ideo<\/span>logies can create or can maintain social power differences between groups <span style=\"color: #003300\">(Foels &amp; Pratto, 2015).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Social power differences are maintained through ideologies that encourage tautological reasoning. \u00a0This reasoning is circular. \u00a0It starts with a mistaken belief, then uses the belief to reinforce itself. \u00a0Rather than looking at evidence, tautology is looking at the outcome as if it was the cause of itself. \u00a0If instead we looked at the cause that led to the outcome, we would see that racism is the cause of different outcomes for different racial groups. \u00a0Ideologies that are not even about social groups, such as meritocracy, can still be used to hide or excuse racism (Foels &amp; Pratto, 2015).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1365\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTautology6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTautology6.png 965w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTautology6-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/rob-foels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1471\/2026\/02\/PowerNeedsTautology6-768x451.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If a person has their freedom of autonomy blocked to a severe enough extent, they are then socially paralyzed from moving about the world. \u00a0Tautologically other people can blame the group for their negative outcome, rather than the actual cause: \u00a0laws and norms restrict certain groups from engaging in many behaviors. \u00a0It is easier for a racist to judge a lack of movement as coming from laziness rather than restricted social movement.<\/p>\n<p>If a person attends a poorly funded school then they are less likely to fully develop their cognitive skills. \u00a0Tautologically other people can blame the group for their negative outcome, rather than focusing on the actual cause: \u00a0a society that refuses to adequately fund education means that different groups have different levels of educational achievement. \u00a0It is easier for a racist to judge a lack of education as coming from low intelligence rather than restricted educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deci, E.
