DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join the Rutgers Initiative for the Book and Scarlet Letterpress for a multi-modal exploration of the relation between print and political action: \nPrinting Politics  \nThursday\, October 23 \n2:00-5:00pm: poster printing and zine making workshop \n5:30-7:00pm: roundtable discussion with artists\, art workers\, and scholars on the role of print media in their diverse practices. \nMurray Hall 303\, 510 George St\, New Brunswick\, NJ \nAll welcome.  RSVP here for the workshop portion of the event; attending the whole 3 hours is not required\, but participants who would like to print posters should plan to spend at least 45 minutes on their projects. No registration is required for the panel discussion. \nCo-sponsored by the Rutgers Democracy Lab \nAbout the panelists: \nShiva Addanki is an artist and educator primarily working in drawing\, painting\, and books. His work deals with divisions of land and labor\, and the defiance of the dispossessed. His most recent exhibitions were at A.D. NYC and Mason Gross School of the Arts\, where he is currently pursuing an MFA and teaching. He publishes the book series Shadow Comms. He previously taught printmaking at Groundswell Community Mural program in Brooklyn and holds an M.A. from the department of Social & Cultural Analysis at NYU. \nBelle Handler is a letterpress printer and multimedia artist whose work and studio practice emerge from her lived experience with disability\, and the use of print technologies spanning from traditional letterpress printing to contemporary computer-aided design and CNC machining. As a printmaker and arts educator she reflects the understanding that artmaking\, printmaking\, and diy-publishing are pivotal resources for disabled communities and individuals. Working as the Studio Coordinator for the Soapbox Community Print Studio in Philadelphia\, her practice has continued to expand towards a focus on arts education and community-building through the shared preservation and community use of book arts technologies. \nDaylon Orr is the founder of Fugitive Materials. He is an archivist\, publisher\, and rare bookseller committed to the preservation of radical\, lesser-known\, and alternative histories\, and to the disruption of informational privilege. Fugitive Materials specializes in global material cultures of resistance: the detritus of radical social movements\, queer histories\, counterculture\, pedagogy\, urbanism\, uprisings\, and art. Daylon organizes\, catalogs\, and places archives\, ephemera\, and primary-source documents with universities and museums around the world. As a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA)\, he also buys and sells books\, periodicals and ephemera and locates rare and out-of-print publications. \nWhitney Trettien is an Associate Professor of English and Faculty Director of the Price Lab for Digital Humanities. Her scholarship explores the history of literary technologies across a wide range of periods\, with a particular interest in how they shape digital media today. Her first book is Cut/Copy/Paste: Fragments from the History of Bookwork. She is currently working on a second book on the history of digital text. She also runs the digital website Printing in Prisons\, which traces how printing presses have been used as means of both exploitation and creative expression within prisons. \nRoberto Gonzalez is the Philadelphia Community Education Navigator for the Petey Greene Program\, where he supports community-based programming. In 2021\, Roberto was accepted to Eastern University’s Prison Education Program. He earned his associate’s degree in liberal arts and graduated in August 2024 as valedictorian of his class with a 4.0 GPA. Released from prison in 2024\, he dedicated himself to furthering his education and supporting other incarcerated scholars. He is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree with a major in Psychology\, and a minor in Communications at Eastern University.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Rutgers Initiative for the Book as we switch out our printing paper and presses for animal parchment and quills in the English department’s first transcribathon! This event will be on Murray Hall’s first floor lounge. \n  \nThis event will take place on April 30th\, beginning at 8:00am with a light breakfast served. We will transcribe the opening 1\,000 lines of two famous medieval poems: Beowulf and Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The event will conclude at 7:00pm\, at which point the Rutgers English Department will have their own loose-leaf hand-made copies of the poems. \n  \nIf you are interested in the history of the book\, the Middle Ages\, manuscripts\, calligraphy\, and pedagogy of teaching history\, please consider joining us for this event. SUMMARY:RIB and Medieval & Renaissance Colloquium Trip to Pergamena
DESCRIPTION:Photo of the four graduate students in front of a stretched goat skin.\n  \nOn March 20th\, 2024\, four graduate students from the Rutgers English Deparment were sponsored by the Rutgers Book Initiative and the Medieval and Renaissance Colloquium to attend a five-hour tour and workshop at Pergamena: Handmade Parchments and Leathers. This event was organized by Novella Frasier and Alice Grissom\, both medievalists invested in material studies and historical practices of book (and manuscript) making. \nPergama rolles of stocked leather.\n  \nTwo graduate students posed in front of Pergamena’s leather stock.\n  \nPergamena is a family-owned leather and parchment making company. They have been making leather for over 400 years! \nStacks of stretched and drying parchment.\n  \nDuring this trip\, the graduate students learned the development process that Pergamena’s resident parchment expert and artist Jesse Meyer has developed and continues to experiment upon. The students were guided through the factory by Dave\, Liv\, and Jesse\, each member emphasizing the creativity and perseverance required to be a small business in such an industry as parchment and leather making. \nJesse Meyer demonstrates how to stretch and scrape parchment to the graduate students.\n  \nThe graduate students were enthusiatic\, not only to ask questions about the process\, production\, time requirements\, and chemical solutions\, but also in working with the materials themselves. Jesse demonstrated how to stretch and scrape the parchment\, after which the students were ready to get their hands working with the slimy material. \nJesse Meyer demonstrates how to hang the goat skin for scraping.\n  \nMimi McMillan skillfully scrapes the stretched goat skin. Novella Frasier lurks behind\, scraping another skin.\n  \nAlice Grissom and Mary Alcaro scrape streteched skins with dexterity.\n  \nAt the end of the visit and workshop\, the graduate students were allowed to browse the parchment stock to purchase any piece of their choosing. During which Dave showed them examples of different skins and details about them. \nThe graduate students look excitedly at parchment samples.\n  \nThe Rutgers Book Initiative and the Medieval & Renaissance Colloquium are incredibly happy with the success of the trip\, and with the educating experience the graduate students had. The trip to Pergamena has reinvigorated the graduate students’ and their colleagues’ appreciation for and attention to matieral studies and production. \n  \nIf you are interested in participating in a trip like this in the future\, or if you have recommendations for places to visit that involve book history and material studies\, please reach out to the Rutgers Book Initiative and/or the Medieval & Renaissance Colloquium. DESCRIPTION:This year Professor Janice Radway will deliver the 36th annual Louis Faugères Bishop Lecture online on March 10\, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. \nJanice Radway is the Walter Dill Scott Professor of Communication Studies and a professor of American studies and gender studies within the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University. Radway is widely known for her scholarship on readers\, reading\, books\, and the history of middlebrow culture. \nHer topic is “Girls\, Zines\, and Their Travels: Imagining Lives\, Crafting Archives for a New Century.” \nA zine\, short for magazine or “fanzine\,” is a non-commercial\, handmade\, self-published resource often devoted to unique or specialized subject matter.
