Please join us on March 30th for presentations by Rutgers professors Kimberly DaCosta Holton, Stephanie Rodríguez, and Engelbert Santana! We will also have poetry readings and recitations, as well as the opportunity to tour campus.

Kimberly DaCosta Holton is an ethnographer and performance studies scholar who writes about expressive culture and literature in the Portuguese-speaking world. A recipient of fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the Social Science Research Council, Holton has published the book Performing Folklore: Ranchos Folclóricos from Lisbon to Newark and co-edited with Andrea Klimt the volume Community, Culture, and the Makings of Identity: Portuguese-Americans Along the Eastern Seaboard, among other scholarly articles and chapters. Holton, known to sing a fado or two, is at work on a book about fado performance in the US.

Stephanie Rodriguez is an Instructor of Translation & Interpreting in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at Rutgers University–Newark and Director of Lives in Translation. She is a Ph.D. student in Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. Her work in translation and interpreting specializes in audiovisual translation, legal translation, court interpreting, medical translation, and community interpreting.

Engelbert Santana is the Dean of Advisement for the Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC) at Rutgers University–Newark. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 2005 and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education in 2008. Before joining the HLLC, Santana served in various roles at Rutgers University–Newark. He first served as an Assessment Counselor with the Student Support Services Program (2005-2009). He then transitioned to the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program (2009-2016) as a Senior Counselor, advising ambitious first-generation, low-income college students in successfully navigating their collegiate experiences and post-graduation goals.
