Cubas’s Racial Paradox: Challenges & Resistance with Amilcar Ortiz

December 2 @ 1:00 pm - 1:20 pm

Please join us for a film screening and discussion with Cuban filmmaker Amilcar Ortiz! Ortiz will examine the complexities of racism and racial discrimination in Cuba, exploring the historical and ongoing struggles of Afro-Cubans. He will analyze institutional barriers, cultural representations, and social movements working for change; and will consider Cuba’s socialist ideology, national identity, and international influences that shape racial dynamics.

Originally from Havana, Cuba, Ortiz is an Afro-Caribbean film and media maker. Ortiz researches and works on issues related to racial discrimination and the cultural contributions of the African Diaspora in Cuba, with a particular interest in documenting and visualizing the richness of Afro-Cubans’ everyday anti-racist work.

This event is free and open to the public. Contact sps@newark.rutgers.edu for more information.
