{"id":887,"date":"2026-02-20T19:08:04","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T19:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/swarm-intelligence-lab\/?p=887"},"modified":"2026-02-20T19:08:04","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T19:08:04","slug":"modeling-collective-decision-making-in-network-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/swarm-intelligence-lab\/modeling-collective-decision-making-in-network-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Modeling collective decision-making in network systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh off the press: new paper!<br \/>\nInspired by biological insights from fish schools, we introduce a model for collective decision-making for network systems.<\/p>\n<p>Think of everyday situations like:<br \/>\n&#8211; a team converging on Tool A vs. Tool B,<br \/>\n&#8211; a community tipping toward Policy 1 vs. Policy 2,<br \/>\n&#8211; a robot swarm choosing Route left vs. right.<br \/>\nIn our framework, each individual has intrinsic decision states and social influence couples individuals through a social network.<br \/>\nAn interesting outcome is a set of closed-form algebraic expressions that quantify how the starting conditions (basins of attraction) shape the final group choice.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd0d What is a &#8220;basin of attraction&#8221;?<br \/>\nIt is simply the region of starting states that will end up in the same final outcome, that is how &#8220;easy&#8221; it is for the group to end up choosing A versus B.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-888 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/swarm-intelligence-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/862\/2026\/02\/1771535163517.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/swarm-intelligence-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/862\/2026\/02\/1771535163517.jpeg 912w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/swarm-intelligence-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/862\/2026\/02\/1771535163517-300x100.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/swarm-intelligence-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/862\/2026\/02\/1771535163517-768x255.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/>\ud83d\udccc We show how these basins depend on:<br \/>\n&#8211; social influence strength and network topology (who influences whom),<br \/>\n&#8211; internal traits like stubbornness and bias.<br \/>\n<br class=\"Apple-interchange-newline\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2705We validate the theory on real data, including the Kapferer Tailor Shop strike-decision network, and find that topology can dramatically reshape which outcome becomes likely, even when individual tendencies stay the same.<\/p>\n<p>read more: https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/abstract\/document\/11368740<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh off the press: new paper!
