National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
This Notice informs potential Individual Predoctoral Fellowships to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (F31) applicants that effective April 9th, 2024, NIGMS will no longer participate in PA-23-271 “Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Parent F31-Diversity)”. NIGMS will not accept any applications submitted in response to PA-23-271, including resubmissions, after this date.
To replace NIGMS’ participation in the Parent F31-Diversity program, NIGMS has launched the Advancing Research Careers (ARC) (F99/K00) program to support promising, late-stage graduate students from diverse backgrounds, for example those from underrepresented groups (see Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity), to transition into and succeed in mentored postdoctoral research positions. Graduate students who previously applied to NIGMS through the Parent F31-Diversity Notice of Funding Opportunity and require at least 1-2 years of predoctoral research training and up to 3 years of mentored postdoctoral research and career development activities are encouraged to apply to the ARC program.
NIGMS will continue to participate in PA-23-161 “Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Fellowship for Students at Institutions Without NIH-Funded Institutional Predoctoral Dual-Degree Training Programs (Parent F30)”.
NIGMS will continue to invest significantly in predoctoral graduate training and efforts to broaden participation in the biomedical research workforce via our Institutional NRSA training programs:
- Basic Biomedical Sciences
- Medical Scientist Training Program
- Leading Equity and Advancing Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program
- Initiative for Maximizing Student Development,
- Graduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement,
- Bridges to the Doctorate
- Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Administrative Supplement).
