{"id":365,"date":"2020-07-09T16:56:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T16:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/tina-liu-lab\/?page_id=365"},"modified":"2024-05-30T17:42:42","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T17:42:42","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/tina-liu-lab\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bacteria and archaea are the most abundant organisms on Earth and are connected to myriad aspects of our lives, from helping make the food we eat, to impacting our health and well-being, to shaping the environment we live in. Like us, they also face the threat of infection by their viruses, which are called phages. As a result, microbes have evolved diverse immune systems to protect themselves. CRISPR (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">c<\/span>lustered <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">r<\/span>egularly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">i<\/span>nterspaced <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">s<\/span>hort <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">p<\/span>alindromic <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">r<\/span>epeat)-Cas (CRISPR-associated) loci are a class of prokaryotic adaptive immune systems that use RNA-guided effector complexes to defend against phages and other mobile genetic elements. Our lab aims to understand the diverse mechanisms by which CRISPR-Cas systems work, and use these insights to engineer new tools for biotechnology and medicine.
