Program 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2019, we initiated the VOICE Program with the following objectives in mind:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To stratify demographics at risk in gun-related homicides<\/li>\n<li>Determine circumstances that raise the risk of gun-related homicides<\/li>\n<li>Investigate health risk factors related to gun-related homicides<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We extrapolated data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) from the years 2013-2017 regarding mortality across gun-related homicides, suicides, homicide-suicide, and other gun-related injuries.\u00a0 From this research, we analyzed the following:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">The majority of gun violence deaths were homicides\u00a0<\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">(54%, N=1,317), followed by suicides (37.7%, N=920)<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">In NJ, Essex and Camden counties had the highest rates of <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">gun homicide<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,1,\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">The most common site of death was at home (45.6%) and in <\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,1,\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">the street (29.8%)<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">The majority of injured individuals were treated at the ER (37%), by EMS <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">(33.2%), and\/or in hospital inpatient care (9.3%)<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">2\/5 of injured individuals died at the hospital <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">(41.3%)<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">The most common cause of death related to gunshot wounds was by injury to <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">the head (48%), followed by the thorax (28.6%) and <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">abdomen (9.3%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">More than one 1\/3 of deaths were related to suicide <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">(37.7%)\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">1\/4 of deaths was related to youth violence <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">(ages 10-24) (24.1%) and were the result of <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">homicides (N=485)<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">More than 1\/10 of deaths were IPV-related <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">incidents (11.8%).\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Most of the homicide-suicide incidents were caused by\u00a0<\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">IPV (78.1%).<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">More than 1\/10 of deaths (13.1%) were associated <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">with crime (drug dealing, robbery, gang, sexual assault,\u00a0<\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">etc.)<\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Mortality varied by demographics<\/span>\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Most homicide-suicides were associated with\u00a0<\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">a recent incidence of abuse (78.9%)\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Suicide was associated with mental health\u00a0<\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">issues (47.7%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u200b\u200bLooking forward, there is an urgent need to screen patients for firearms at home similar to clinical guidelines with suicidal ideation, IPV, and youth violence.\u00a0 There is also a need to train healthcare professionals regarding patient gun safety and
