Wei-Xing Zong, Ph.D.

Dr. Zong received his PhD degree in 2000 in Dr. Celine Gelinas laboratory at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), where he showed that Rel/NF-kB transcription factors block apoptosis by upregulating the BCL-2 family member BFL-1/A1. From 2000-2005, he did his postdoctoral training in Dr. Craig Thompson’s laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, where he showed that Bax and Bak are gateways to apoptosis, and that DNA alkylating damage induces hyperactivation of PARP, depletion of NAD and ATP, and necrotic cell death in cancer cells that are dependent on glycolysis. In 2005, Dr. Zong joined the Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at Stony Brook University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Tenured Associate Professor in 2011 then to Full Professor in 2013. He moved to the Department of Chemical Biology, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University in 2015, and is now a Distinguished Professor and John L. Colaizzi Endowed Chair. Dr. Zong has published over 100 papers on apoptosis, autophagy, cell metabolism, and growth signaling. His lab is currently investigating molecular regulation of nitrogen metabolism in cancer, and is characterizing novel tumor suppressors in B-cell malignancies.
