{"id":605,"date":"2018-01-03T15:58:15","date_gmt":"2018-01-03T15:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/weiwei-chen\/?p=605"},"modified":"2020-08-01T16:28:06","modified_gmt":"2020-08-01T16:28:06","slug":"research-aims-to-improve-operational-efficiencies-at-busy-u-s-border-crossings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/weiwei-chen\/research-aims-to-improve-operational-efficiencies-at-busy-u-s-border-crossings\/","title":{"rendered":"Research aims to improve operational efficiencies at busy U.S. border crossings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Professor Benjamin Melamed and I have been working on a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, titled \u201cModeling Methodology and Simulation of Port-of-Entry Systems\u201d ($684,587 for the period 1\/2016 to 6\/2018). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">The project involves devising a simulation modeling methodology and a suite of detailed simulation models of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic moving through busy ports-of-entry. Operating decisions at the ports-of-entry are currently made in an ad-hoc manner based primarily on observed traffic conditions. The model-based decision support systems will complement an existing empirical methodology of measuring waiting times at the ports-of-entry.
