Derek Soto

after Marie Howe

It was like shattering glass one second from falling, the first step you take on fresh ice, hearing the pressure under your foot as the impression appears, it was like the last sentence of your favorite novel, knowing it was destined to end but wanting to continue to read, it was like a plant you kept watering, only for the ends to wilt, like driving at night with the streetlight flickering until it just so happened that, as you passed, it went out.

Derek Soto is from Middletown, New Jersey, and is on track to graduate in 2027. He writes, “I’m still fairly new to writing poetry, but it’s something I’ve grown to really like. I hope everyone who takes the time to read this piece enjoys reading it as much as I did writing it.”
