Angela and Heather, two women in their young 20s, are outside a radical clinic in Chicago, both exhausted after their 3-hour silent drive from a rural town in Wisconsin. Heather, about to receive a pregnancy test, is extremely panicked, while Angela, her more promiscuous best friend, is consoling her. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Heather, hold my hand [\u200b<em>Angela places an open palm above the middle console and Heather reluctantly places her hand atop<\/em>\u200b]. No matter what happens, you will always have me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: [\u200b<em>looking down at her lap<\/em>\u200b] I just&#8230; I don\u2019t know what to say. [\u200b<em>she meets Angela\u2019s eyes<\/em>\u200b] I don\u2019t want a baby, Angela. I\u2019m not ready.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Heather, remember, we don\u2019t know anything yet&#8230; maybe you\u2019re late because you\u2019re stressed. Maybe it\u2019s that new teaching job you just got.<\/p>\n<p><em>Angela looks at Heather, hopeful that Heather will believe what she is saying, but by the look on her face, she knows Heather does not. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: I just&#8230; I guess I just don\u2019t even know what I would do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Okay, just to humor you&#8230; let\u2019s say you are pregnant. That baby is gonna have the best mom of all tim- [\u200b<em>Heather still looking straight ahead, not meeting Angela\u2019s eyes, interrupts her<\/em>\u200b].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: I mean, I don\u2019t have the money, I don\u2019t have the space, I don\u2019t have the time, oh my goodness, I don\u2019t even have a husband! I, I- [\u200b<em>Angela interrupts<\/em>] \u200b .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Stop! We\u2019re going to figure it out once we get there. But even so, babe, remember there are other options&#8230; [\u200b<em>getting slower as she speaks because she knows Heather\u2019s views<\/em>\u200b] you remember Laura, right? She had the procedure about a year ago, said it didn\u2019t even hurt. She-<\/p>\n<p><em>Angela stops talking as Heather suddenly meets her eyes. Her eyes are wide, mouth slightly open, breath hitched in the back of her throat. Heather is in disbelief about what Angela is insinuating. Coming from a religious childhood and a conservative family, the thought of an abortion never even crosses her mind, until Angela says it. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: Are you seriously saying what I think you\u2019re saying?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Heather, be real. It\u2019s not an impossible thought. Plenty of women go through it. Now it\u2019s even easier with that court case legalizing them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: [\u200b<em>progressively getting more worked up<\/em>\u200b] Do you realize what my parents will say? Oh my god, I\u2019m gonna have to tell my parents! I\u2019m gonna have to tell my mother!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Heather! You\u2019re a 23 year old grown woman. Your parents, more specifically your mother, does not have a say in this decision. It\u2019s \u200byour\u200b choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: I just&#8230; I can\u2019t believe this is happening to me. It\u2019s not me. I mean, I go to church for heaven&#8217;s sake! It\u2019s not like I\u2019m that girl who goes around sleeping with everyone. I had one night, I don\u2019t even- [\u200b<em>Heather suddenly realizes what she\u2019s saying and who she\u2019s saying it to. Angela is sullenly looking at the steering wheel, hurt by the words her best friend is saying, knowing that she is referring to herself.<\/em>\u200b] Angela, I\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t mean that, I just-<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: I get it, Heather. I get it. I\u2019m not like you. I\u2019m not a golden child. I wasn\u2019t our high school valedictorian. I don\u2019t have a college degree. I don\u2019t-<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: Angela, really, I didn\u2019t mean it like that. I wasn\u2019t thinking. I don\u2019t even-<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: I think we should head in now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather<\/strong>\u200b: Angela, really, I didn\u2019t mean it. I-<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela<\/strong>\u200b: Heather, just drop it. Let\u2019s go in.<\/p>\n<p><em>Angela unbuckles her seat belt, opens the door then leaves, leaving Heather in the passenger seat, shameful at the words she has said to her best friend, someone who has been nothing but supportive and informative throughout this whole process. Slowly but surely, she takes a deep breath in and out, opens the door, and heads into the clinic. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Madison&#8217;s Bio:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Madison Lee is a freshman at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, majoring in Computer Science and Economics. Her first creative writing course was taken in high school and since then, she has, to a greater extent, enjoyed writing fiction and reading multiple genres. Although her passions lie in the technology and business fields, she attempts to write on her pastime.
