{"id":2138,"date":"2021-10-28T21:41:08","date_gmt":"2021-10-28T21:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/?page_id=2138"},"modified":"2021-10-28T21:47:01","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T21:47:01","slug":"wine-night","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/volume-2-fall-2021\/wine-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Wine Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h4><em>Shannon Heylin<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jon rocks back and forth on the ground<\/p>\n<p>Sipping on a mixture of red and white wine<\/p>\n<p>Filled to the brim in a floral teacup that<\/p>\n<p>He cradles like a baby bird<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emily hovers on the edge of the pink couch<\/p>\n<p>Taking discreet hits of her pen<\/p>\n<p>In between enthusiastic comments and laughter<\/p>\n<p>Liz lounges back into the cushions next to Emily<\/p>\n<p>Protectively grasping the stemmed wine glass<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The moon hovers above the yellow house<\/p>\n<p>Full and content<\/p>\n<p>Shining protectively over the moment<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, Liz and Emily are possessed, by the music, to stand<\/p>\n<p>Jon is in the corner of the room giggling<\/p>\n<p>Observing the two scream Taylor Swift<\/p>\n<p>Cheering on their clumsy dancing<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The studio apartment is filled with heavy humid air<\/p>\n<p>And a subtle scent of weed.<\/p>\n<p>The occasional gust of the cool summer breeze enters<\/p>\n<p>Through the windows, upsetting the resting curtains.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Empty wine bottles and glasses clutter the coffee table<\/p>\n<p>Candy hearts stuck between the couch cushions<\/p>\n<p>Saltine crumbs sprinkled across the table<\/p>\n<p>And burrowed between the blue carpet fibers<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I desperately attempt to hold on to the moment<\/p>\n<p>The mischievous grin on Jon\u2019s face as<\/p>\n<p>He lovingly argues with Liz<\/p>\n<p>She stands defensively in a faded, well-loved, The Doors t-shirt,<\/p>\n<p>And chaotically colorful mismatched socks<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ceiling slopes low<\/p>\n<p>As the conversations die down<\/p>\n<p>The music softens<\/p>\n<p>And coy smiles and empty glasses<\/p>\n<p>Make the decision it\u2019s time to walk home<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Shannon Heylin\u00a0<\/strong>majored in visual arts, concentrating in painting, at Mason Gross School of the Arts, class of 2021. She is from Barrington, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
