{"id":2166,"date":"2021-10-29T00:12:40","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T00:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/?page_id=2166"},"modified":"2021-10-29T00:34:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T00:34:41","slug":"thirteen-ways-of-looking-at-a-mirror","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/volume-2-fall-2021\/thirteen-ways-of-looking-at-a-mirror\/","title":{"rendered":"Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Mirror"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h4><em>Tasnova Choudhury<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I<\/p>\n<p>The young child lit up.<\/p>\n<p>He saw a friend in his reflection<\/p>\n<p>And raised his sippy-cup<\/p>\n<p>To cheer on the other.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>II<\/p>\n<p>She caught sight of her figure<\/p>\n<p>In the puddles created by the storms.<\/p>\n<p>What beauty sprouts from the destruction.<\/p>\n<p>A modern-day narcissus forms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>III<\/p>\n<p>In sudden flight,<\/p>\n<p>she ran out of the house,<\/p>\n<p>not before glimpsing<\/p>\n<p>the unkempt sight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>IV<\/p>\n<p>The professor talks to his reflection<\/p>\n<p>in a lecture of one hundred<\/p>\n<p>unknown faces\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The kids turn on their cameras.<\/p>\n<p>They stare at their reflection<\/p>\n<p>And ignore the lecture,<\/p>\n<p>then pretend they have a poor connection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>V<\/p>\n<p>The philosopher holds his face<\/p>\n<p>And asks himself \u201cIs it really me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>VI<\/p>\n<p>The seven-year-olds scurried to the bathroom,<\/p>\n<p>Turned their lights off,<\/p>\n<p>And chanted<\/p>\n<p>Bloody Mary-<\/p>\n<p>Bloody Mary-<\/p>\n<p>Bloody Mary.<\/p>\n<p>One kid fainted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>VII<\/p>\n<p>The superstitious man broke a mirror once.<\/p>\n<p>His seven years weren\u2019t up.<\/p>\n<p>He hasn&#8217;t looked in a mirror since.<\/p>\n<p>Not even before a hookup.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>VIII<\/p>\n<p>He discerned each strand of hair.<\/p>\n<p>Detected every blemish.<\/p>\n<p>In disgust, he thought<\/p>\n<p>Is this what others witness?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>IX<\/p>\n<p>The artisan marvels at the border,<\/p>\n<p>as he runs his fingers to feel the texture.<\/p>\n<p>He concludes it is mahogany.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>X<\/p>\n<p>The custodian discerns the toothpaste blotches<\/p>\n<p>and wonders why the college kids brush their teeth<\/p>\n<p>with such force.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>XI<\/p>\n<p>The Harry Potter fan sees the Erised<\/p>\n<p>and lets herself imagine the dreams that<\/p>\n<p>seem too far out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>XII<\/p>\n<p>She stares, transfixed<\/p>\n<p>at the hazel eyes looking back at her.<\/p>\n<p>The light in her eyes, eclipsed,<\/p>\n<p>And unrecognized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>XIII<\/p>\n<p>The older man can\u2019t help but imagine<\/p>\n<p>his seventeen-year-old self<\/p>\n<p>looking back at him.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasnova Choudhury<\/strong>, class of 2023, is a Molecular Biology and Biochemistry major, with a minor in English.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tasnova Choudhury &nbsp; I The young child lit up.
