Raj Mitaliya<\/em><\/h4>\n <\/p>\n
When I stand up, I am thirty feet tall,<\/p>\n
my head poking through a roof of leaves<\/p>\n
Amidst a fortress of wood.<\/p>\n
Below me, a sea of broken logs<\/p>\n
leads down to a path of finite green.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When I climb down my tree,<\/p>\n
the wind blows blades of dewy grass<\/p>\n
that dance and brush against my ankles.<\/p>\n
In front of me–my stream.<\/p>\n
Paw prints fresh on the mud,<\/p>\n
a signature from the residents of the forest.<\/p>\n
Pebbles and rocks and stones lie on the river bed,<\/p>\n
blue-green water trickles down,<\/p>\n
reflects the warm sun rays, amplifies<\/p>\n
the canopy of green and specks of blue above.<\/p>\n
Water striders zip across the surface<\/p>\n
to the fish below–angels in heaven.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When the sun rises the orchestra begins.<\/p>\n
The blue jays tweet.<\/p>\n
The cardinals twit.<\/p>\n
The robins yeep.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When the sun meets the horizon, the choir is cued in.<\/p>\n
The deer scamper.<\/p>\n
The foxes shriek.<\/p>\n
The crickets chirp.<\/p>\n
The best concert in the world plays.<\/p>\n
The artist performing, Mother Nature.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When I lie in my bed two hundred feet away,<\/p>\n
I leave my window open<\/p>\n
to let the symphony fill my room.<\/p>\n
The tranquility lowers my shoulders,<\/p>\n
slows my pulse,<\/p>\n
numbs my mind. Ten years later,<\/p>\n
the harmony of the woods still dulls my senses,<\/p>\n
lowers my guard, puts me to sleep.<\/p>\n

Raj Mitaliya,<\/strong> writes, “I am a sophomore at Rutgers University New Brunswick. When I first took Professor November’s Intro to Creative Writing class, I registered with the intention of completing one of my core requirements, but I found something deeper. Based on the way my professor taught this class and assignments were given, writing became a lot more fun. I remember that, at the beginning of the semester, I was upset because we were starting off with poems, and I didn\u2019t enjoy creating them at the time, but after our poetry unit was done, I was a little sad that it was over because writing poems was relaxing.
