 <\/p>\n

Phoebe told me to wish on satellites<\/p>\n

and that she knows the end<\/p>\n

Adam told me to make a system<\/p>\n

Mary told me to just pretend<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Eileen took me every Sunday<\/p>\n

and bought a necklace with a saint<\/p>\n

Eliza told me it\u2019s all a simulation<\/p>\n

Mary told me just to wait<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Garret told me we go out alone<\/p>\n

Owen told me to fuck off<\/p>\n

My stupid cats just meowed at me<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think they\u2019re far off<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mary goes to a Catholic school now<\/p>\n

She knows it isn\u2019t real<\/p>\n

But I still think about our time there<\/p>\n

And all the wounds she helped me heal<\/p>\n

When I scream at swollen stars now<\/p>\n

Or pick my brain until it bleeds<\/p>\n

I ask for something to believe in<\/p>\n

Mary, I never wanted to be freed<\/p>\n

Hannah Vliet<\/strong> (she\/they) is a senior Honors College Scholar double majoring in Theatre Arts and Cinema Studies, minoring in Creative Writing. She is heavily involved with Cabaret Theater, where she starred in the Fall 2021 main-stage play, \u201cGruesome Playground Injuries,\u201d and with the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance, where she volunteers as a hotline worker and survivor advocate. Her other recent writing includes reviews for the New Jersey International Film Festival, short plays for Stream On!
