{"id":3086,"date":"2022-10-04T20:24:48","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T20:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/?page_id=3086"},"modified":"2022-11-09T02:32:27","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T02:32:27","slug":"symphony-no-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/vol-3-winter-2022-23\/symphony-no-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Sonata No. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h4><em>Claire Oplinger<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prelude<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She tore it up<\/p>\n<p>Starting with each corner<\/p>\n<p>And working her way into the middle<\/p>\n<p>Until a pile of snow and ink<\/p>\n<p>Pooled on the carpet<\/p>\n<p>She picked up the flute once more<\/p>\n<p>Breathy and unfocused<\/p>\n<p>But honest this time<\/p>\n<p>No longer hiding<\/p>\n<p>Behind inflexible symbols<\/p>\n<p>And expecting to find<\/p>\n<p>Answers<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong>Waltz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Practicing Bizet and Brahms<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Beethoven, Schubert, Saint-Saens<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Strozzi, the Schumanns, and Bonds<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Fill the room all evening long<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Then there\u2019s Cecile Chaminade<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Crawford, Debussy, and Bon<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Verdi and Rachmaninov<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Fill the heart\u2019s fractures with song<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rondo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All good gifts come from above<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped in hidden calm from above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Who can know this well of peace?<\/p>\n<p>Of our understanding, it is far above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Flowing like a mountain stream<\/p>\n<p>Notes whose origins are in the clouds above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Heavenly rhythms ride the spring winds<\/p>\n<p>Circling down as they float from above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They rest their infinite wings in mortal form<\/p>\n<p>As the melodies spill down from above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Polished silver, maple wood, furnished gold<\/p>\n<p>Glimmering like mysteries from above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a midnight ballet, Light\u2019s Song rushes out<\/p>\n<p>To chase out the dark with a sword from above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Claire Oplinger,<\/strong> class of 2023, is a Flute Performance major at the Mason Gross School of the Arts. She grew up in Morristown, New Jersey, and plans to pursue a career in music librarianship after completing her studies at Rutgers. These poems were written during Susan Miller\u2019s Spring 2022 Creative Writing\u2014Poetry class.
