{"id":3237,"date":"2022-10-20T19:50:43","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T19:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/?page_id=3237"},"modified":"2022-10-20T19:50:43","modified_gmt":"2022-10-20T19:50:43","slug":"four-seasons","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.rutgers.edu\/writers-house-review\/vol-3-winter-2022-23\/four-seasons\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Seasons"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h4><em>Ishani Mhatre<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Checked and double checked<\/p>\n<p>Passports, documents, and plane tickets<\/p>\n<p>Pajamas, winter jackets, and turtle-neck sweaters<\/p>\n<p>Stuffed inside a sturdy, brown leather suitcase<\/p>\n<p>Until its contents overflowed<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll probably never understand<\/p>\n<p>Their fear of stepping into an unknown<\/p>\n<p>They paced back and forth,<\/p>\n<p>Waved goodbye to their parents, who peered from a doorway<\/p>\n<p>Entered into the waiting car,<\/p>\n<p>Watched their home get smaller and smaller<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes when I flip through old family albums<\/p>\n<p>I stop, think, wonder<\/p>\n<p>What life would have been like<\/p>\n<p>In a different country,<\/p>\n<p>In a different neighborhood,<\/p>\n<p>With different friends,<\/p>\n<p>A different home<\/p>\n<p>The four seasons nothing but a picture<\/p>\n<p>On old, faded paper<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I glance outside<\/p>\n<p>And watch the the fall leaves<\/p>\n<p>Sing in a brilliant melody of<\/p>\n<p>Rosy reds, brilliant browns, and peaceful purples<\/p>\n<p>Until fall lends itself to winter<\/p>\n<p>And the barren branches still manage to<\/p>\n<p>Sparkle with the light of a thousand snowflakes<\/p>\n<p>And then the warm sun fosters tiny rose buds<\/p>\n<p>Blossom into beautiful pink and white flowers<\/p>\n<p>Which transform into the steady, dependable green<\/p>\n<p>Of summer leaves and humidity<\/p>\n<p>Until the crisp air paints the green, summer leaves with<\/p>\n<p>Rosy reds, brilliant browns, and peaceful purples<\/p>\n<p>The colors signaling the end and start of a cycle<\/p>\n<p>The Four Seasons<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I am content exactly where I am<\/p>\n<p>Constant evolution and change<\/p>\n<p>Forged by ancestral roots across oceans<\/p>\n<p>And shaped by the chaotic, loving nature of my home<\/p>\n<p>My current life determined by my caregivers<\/p>\n<p>My future determined by me<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Ishani Mhatre<\/strong> is a third-year student at Rutgers (Class of 2025), studying computer science. Her hometown is in Edison, New Jersey. In her free time, she loves painting\/drawing, reading, biking, and listening to music. She writes, &#8220;I loved tapping into my creativity in Professor November\u2019s class! All the assignments we did were interesting and I enjoyed exploring different styles of writing.
