Robin Hu<\/em><\/h4>\n <\/p>\n
The mercury thermometer was a magic wand
\nFlawless and smooth, wondrous in its power
\nThe living room\u2019s bright lamp
\nShone upon the clear, viscous mercury<\/p>\n
As if I wanted to consume its powers
\nMy three year old mind decided to stick it in my mouth
\nThe dull glass rolled against my sharp incisors<\/p>\n
I bit down and heard a crunch
\nThe shards of the thermometer scattered
\nWith a life of their own like ants throughout my mouth
\nWith the mercury guiding them along<\/p>\n
My mother walked into the living room
\nHer fingers mashed the numbers on our home phone
\nFrantically dialing the ambulance<\/p>\n
I sat peacefully on my mother\u2019s lap on the front lawn
\nListening to the cicadas chirp
\nBlue and red, sirens punctuated the dark, starry sky
\nWaking up the quiet night<\/p>\n
I was rushed to a hospital
\nPut on a bed
\nSurrounded by tall faceless men in scrubs and masks
\nPoked and prodded<\/p>\n
Until one of them declared
\nNothing was wrong
\nThe glass was removed from my mouth
\nAs my mother breathed a sigh of relief<\/p>\n
I was offered an ice pop
\nCherry with two prongs
\nIt was sweet
\nI only had half<\/p>\n

\nRobin Hu<\/strong> is a Finance major from Roseland, New Jersey. He plans on graduating from Rutgers Business School in May 2024. This poem is about a childhood memory of an incident where he bit down on a mercury thermometer and was rushed to the emergency room.
