Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h4><em>Meghan Scheuing<\/em><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>these things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>pay attention to the stupid things<\/p>\n<p>the pitch of car horn<\/p>\n<p>the rattle of garbage cans<\/p>\n<p>the sound electricity makes before the world goes dark<\/p>\n<p>and the rattle of thunder that takes the house<\/p>\n<p>by such surprise<\/p>\n<p>it can\u2019t help but start to shake<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>yes, hold on tight to these silly things<\/p>\n<p>like the sound of your sister screaming<\/p>\n<p>on the phone with her november boyfriend<\/p>\n<p>and the chorus of curses in the hours after<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate him\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">\u201cI hate him\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 200px\">\u201cI hate him\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>and the quiet things, yes, the tiny things<\/p>\n<p>the crows in october<\/p>\n<p>the mourning dove at dawn<\/p>\n<p>the coo of bedtime, and a kettle\u2019s scream<\/p>\n<p>the things that are spoken<\/p>\n<p>long after<\/p>\n<p>we\u2019ve closed our eyes at night<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>so hold on tight to these fleeting things<\/p>\n<p>the promises, the forevers,<\/p>\n<p>the sounds that one day<\/p>\n<p>will no longer be noise<\/p>\n<p>but memories of a life<\/p>\n<p>that was lived<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the teacher to mold the future<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to have a plan of action<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to know each of their students personally<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">to understand their struggles and strengths<br \/>\nand to be more than just an authority figure for those 180 days of the year<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the female teacher to be a mother<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the male teacher to be a father<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to be stern, yet fair<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">disciplined, yet approachable<br \/>\nseasoned, yet open-minded<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the teacher to accept their pay<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">oftentimes working without definitive contracts<br \/>\nand giving their extra time to students who would not otherwise succeed<br \/>\nwithout it<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the teacher to teach right from wrong<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to teach first draft from second<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to promote pride in one\u2019s work<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to keep students humble<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to keep the classroom current<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to teach the ideals of the past<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to grant their students the truth about history<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">to share all sides of a country\u2019s beginning<br \/>\nand not just the side that is comfortable to portray<br \/>\nto be able to explain why we really celebrate Columbus Day<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the teacher to keep the classroom clean<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to keep the classroom decorated<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to cover up aid-granting posters on testing days<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to defend their classroom<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">in a time where the school can become a battleground<br \/>\nsparked by the impulse of a student who could not be reached<br \/>\ndespite the attempts of his educators.<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the teacher to be compassionate<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to be rational<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to do what is right for the child<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">even if that means holding them back a year<br \/>\nor giving the occasional bad grade<br \/>\ndespite scathing emails from the overbearing mother<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of the parent to let the teacher teach<br \/>\nIt is the responsibility of the teacher to educate the uneducated<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">to reach the unreachable<br \/>\nto speak to those who refuse to hear<br \/>\nand to work with a passion unmatched by other professions<\/p>\n<p>Truthfully, it is the sole responsibility of the teacher to teach<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">regardless of all that they do by their own decision<\/p>\n<p>It is the choice of the teacher to be human<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>another swim<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>far from inviting<br \/>\non those storm-speckled nights<br \/>\nyet enticing on warm sunday mornings<br \/>\nyour deep, royal blue is a sight to behold<br \/>\nas the sun lends you her sparkle<br \/>\nfor a moment,<br \/>\nit seems<\/p>\n<p>the sun-stricken grains<br \/>\nstand guard to your presence<br \/>\nand separate us, still.<br \/>\nthey burn my soles with every step,<br \/>\nand it\u2019s almost as though<br \/>\nthey\u2019d rather strip my skin<br \/>\nthan see you and I<br \/>\ntogether<\/p>\n<p>and yet, with open arms,<br \/>\nwe meet again<br \/>\nbut your riptides whisper \u201cno promises\u201d<br \/>\nand your voice<br \/>\ncracks,<br \/>\nwith each hello you speak<\/p>\n<p>have your roars always been this loud?<br \/>\nand your surf so quick to crash?<br \/>\nthese cloud-lined waves were a cruel illusion<br \/>\nfor this tumble is anything<br \/>\nbut soft<br \/>\nhelp me stay afloat, old friend<br \/>\nI thought we were a team?<\/p>\n<p>once a glimmer so inviting<br \/>\nnow revealed as your<br \/>\nwicked game<br \/>\nI\u2019ve thrashed my arms<br \/>\nand kicked my legs<br \/>\ntell me,<br \/>\nwhy should I remain?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Meghan Scheuing<\/strong> graduated with a BA in communications with a specialization in strategic public relations and a double minor in creative writing and DCIM.
