Sophia Melendez<\/em><\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

She was an accident<\/span><\/p>\n

She happened by chance<\/span><\/p>\n

She was born to be beautiful<\/span><\/p>\n

It was her only task<\/span><\/p>\n

She was a late bloomer<\/span><\/p>\n

She took her time<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of beauty is patience,<\/span><\/p>\n

Her owner would always remind<\/span><\/p>\n

By spring she was in her element<\/span><\/p>\n

She had fulfilled her destiny,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re Marigolds!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And so that was her name, Marigold.<\/span><\/p>\n

But now what?<\/span><\/p>\n

What was she meant to do?<\/span><\/p>\n

She pondered as the sun and moon played hide and seek<\/span><\/p>\n

The moon overtook the sun as the days passed<\/span><\/p>\n

Her petals seemed to grow limper,<\/span><\/p>\n

Her stem\u2019s leaves slowly wilting,<\/span><\/p>\n

And suddenly it was fall<\/span><\/p>\n

And she felt the crisp breeze<\/span><\/p>\n

And it appeared, which meant her time was up<\/span><\/p>\n

She was plucked from her place<\/span><\/p>\n

Marigold wasn\u2019t ready to leave<\/span><\/p>\n

But she had a greater purpose than she knew<\/span><\/p>\n

Her petals were scattered around her owner\u2019s ofrenda<\/span><\/p>\n

And she helped guide souls back\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be united on November First, Dia de Los Muertos\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sophia Melendez<\/strong> plans to graduate in 2025 and is majoring in psychology. She is from South River, New Jersey, a small town next to East Brunswick. She likes to immerse herself in music, so much so that there are very few moments in her day where she is not listening to a song. <\/span><\/p>\n
